Best Way To Save Your Repro Rights in Trump Era - Elect Local Protectors
Get ready to vote for every 'pro choice' candidate you can like Whitney Tilson who's running for mayor of NYC.
NYC DEM MAYORAL CANDIDATE WHITNEY TILSON, WIFE & DAUGHTERS
Readers - with Donald Trump and his zealous anti choice Project 2025 appointees just weeks away from moving into the White House, it’s time to wrap up your post -election self care and think ahead.
How are you going to protect your own reproductive freedom now?
If you are lucky enough to live in a state with a governor and legislature that has said - “Yes”, we will respect and protect the reproductive rights of the women of our state - your mission is to make sure you keep it that way.
If you are trapped in an abortion ban state without a constitutional amendment opportunity, you still need to start voting for every Democratic candidate you can.
In either case you need to be laser focused on electing local leaders who will stand up to the abortion attack pack : Trump, JD Vance, RFK Jr and the rabid abortion- banning attorney generals in Red states who are desperate to get the medical records of female residents in their states..
That’s why, it’s time to take a hard look at who is standing in the breach in your state and who else you can elect who will be your champion for abortion access locally.
Take New York City for example. It’s the country’s largest city and home to 4.5 million women. It comprises the greatest population of women in one municipality in the entire country. Women make up 52% of its residents.
Who NYC elects as its next mayor, is going to matter A LOT for the women of that great city who are determined to keep their reproductive freedom.
And it will also matter a hell of a lot to all the women across the country who’ve been flocking to the reproductive health clinics of NYC to get the abortion and miscarriage care which is illegal in their own cities and states..
If New Yorkers re-elect their currently indicted mayor Eric Adams, who has been cosying up to Donald Trump ( in hopes for a pardon?), how’s that going to work out for NYC’s women.
How about - NOT work out.
Adams has even hinted that he may switch from his current Democratic party affiliation to become a Republican.
That’s why I am paying hyper attention to the other candidates running against Adams, to be the Democratic nominee in next November’s mayoral election here. The NYC desperately needs a mayor who will be a warrior for abortion access.
And that’s also why I was eager to talk to Whitney Tilson, a longtime Democratic activist, investor and philanthropist, who recently jumped into the race to challenge Adams and other contenders, to be the Democratic nominee for mayor.
Keep in mind, that in NYC, especially in this Trump era, the Dem nominee is highly likely to be elected mayor.
I liked what I heard from Tilson. He was no holds barred in his commitment as the city’s potential future mayor to protect abortion access in NYC, including protecting medical providers as well as abortion clinics from intrusive anti abortion protestors.
“I strongly support women’s right to choose and to control their own bodies,” he emphasized to me.
Even better, Tilson,58, explained that reproductive freedom is very personal to him as the father “of three beautiful daughters: Alice, 28, Emily ,25 and Catherine, 22.”
“They’re all in their child-bearing years and heaven forbid, they might need care if something goes wrong, to save their lives and that has been made illegal in many states. It’s outrageous . And Donald Trump is to blame for this.”
Tilson vowed that since New York is “one of the premier medical capitals of the world, where people come to get the best care, I want to make New York a sanctuary city for any woman needing medical care related to terminating a pregnancy.”
New Yorkers including those in NYC just voted on Nov 4 by the wide margin of 62.5% for a state constitutional amendment to protect their reproductive healthcare and autonomy. Tilson knows that the women and men of NYC will want him, if elected to have their backs big time on this issue.
He also told me that he intends to fight any attempt by Trump and his Republican accomplices to end the Affordable Care Act - which is damn good news for the 42% of the state’s residents who get health benefits through the ACA.
Trump just went on the ‘Meet The Press’ news show on Dec 8 and threatened again to replace Obamacare ( the ACA) with his “concepts of a plan” for healthcare, because he claims “Obamacare stinks. It’s lousy.”
In response Tilson told me: “I will fight and use New York’s influence in the bully pulpit to expand, not strip healthcare, including women’s reproductive rights and healthcare, to all 8.3 million citizens in New York for sure.”
Now readers, these are exactly the kind of statements you want to hear from the local officials that you'll have a chance to elect in your cities and states in the coming year.
Yes, Trump will be president and he will have Congress - at least until the mid terms - but YOU have power to elect local officials like Tilson who can be your reproductive bulwark .
Mayor of NYC is a national leadership position, and Tilson also told me that if elected he’s prepared to stand up to Trump against another unprecedented and dictator - like issue that I and many others have never had to think about before - Trump’s threats of revenge against journalists and the media.
Isn’t this supposed to be a democracy?
Tilson didn’t downplay Trump’s threat when I asked him about it.
We’re going to have “to stop all sorts of outrageous un-American authoritarian things,” he responded.”Fortunately, there are a lot of lawyers in New York. I’m married to one… We will have the very best lawyers in New York when we need to do legal battle here to protect New York.”
“I intend to lead,” Tilson wanted to make clear.” There is a lot to be said for a bully pulpit and leading by example.“We’re New Yorkers. We don’t get intimidated or bullied” by” Trump.
Now, that’s what I like to hear from a Democratic candidate running to be the next mayor of NYC.
Make sure that’s what you’re hearing from your own local reps. And vote accordingly, to protect yourselves.
