Every week I write about the non stop assaults that Donald Trump and the Republican party in state legislatures are making on women all across the country.
However, the mainstream media is so full of news about all the other attacks that Trump, Stephen Miller, Pam Bondi and the rest of the Trumpist crew are making on our democracy, that the new threats to reproductive rights don’t make headlines.
That’s why I’m on a mission to tell you my readers - who do care about this - to inform you about new laws attacking women’s health choices and how those hurt and even kill women in real life.
But I also think it’s really important to tell you about who is fighting back. Who refuses to give up hope, to concede one inch of women’s rights.
That’s why I recently wrote about Senator Ghazala Hashmi, the Democratic candidate campaigning to be the next Lt Governor in Virginia against a MAGA anti abortion zealot.
I will be introducing you to a lot of candidates who are determined to restore women’s freedom to make their own choices, in the next year leading up to the mid term elections.
Beth Davidson is one of those candidates running for Congress and combatting the Trump and Republican misogyny. You need to hear her optimism and feel her positive energy.
“It’s in our hands to make the future a better one, a more hopeful one and a safer one for women everywhere,” she says.
Aww! Now, doesn’t that feel good to listen to someone say that.
We need her spirit to fight back against the very deliberate Trump and state Republican war on women.
And listen this isn’t just an assault on abortion and reproductive freedom - it IS a war against the full freedom of every woman and girl in this country.
One political party has decided that it makes it’s in their political interest to take away the rights of half the country.
TRUMP & REPUBLICANS WANT WOMEN TO BE 2ND CLASS CITIZENS
It is a strategy to make women and girls 2nd class citizens.
Like they were in the 1950’s when men ‘ruled’ the economy and didn’t have to compete with women for jobs.
Abortion bans which force women in America to give birth in almost half the US states are a deliberate attempt to take away their ability to be able support themselves and to make a whole range of decisions for the benefit of themselves.
Abortion bans in Red states and the possibility that Trump and RFK Jr finds ways to enact a national ‘backdoor’ ban’ says “that we care less about women’s health,” according to Beth.
“And we care less about their lives and their survival. Then if a pregnancy goes wrong ( with complications) you don’t have the same rights to save yourself and your future fertility. Everything can be at stake.”
Yes - women today do not have the same rights as men in over 20 Red states, to save their own lives and fertility.
Can you imagine if that situation was reversed and men were forced to become infertile or lose their lives because ‘their fetus’ mattered more than anything?
Beth Davidson is a mom of two, and a county legislator in a district right next to my own in Westchester, New York, which is just north of New York City.
She felt so strongly that the Republican representing her 17th Congressional District, Mike Lawler, had so betrayed her and her fellow constituents, that she decided to run to be the Democratic nominee to face off against him in the 2026 mid term elections.
Beth is leading a pack of other contenders to become the nominee and is working non stop to introduce her self to voters and gather support for her campaign against Lawler, the incumbent.
You see, Lawler had convinced voters in the ‘purple’ 17th District that he was a ‘moderate’ ‘bipartisan’ Republican .
But since the last election, he has marched in lockstep with Donald Trump and he voted for the devastating healthcare and food assistance cuts contained in Trump’s ‘Big Beautiful Bill’, which Davidson calls the ‘Bloated Brutal Bill’.
Davidson says that 44% of the residents of her district rely for healthcare on Medicaid ,which has been slashed by Trump, so that he and his billionaire buddies can get a massive tax cut.
Lawler supported that bill which Davidson describes as “anti family, anti woman and anti worker.” He’s also enabling Trump’s power grab from Congress in a multitude of ways but especially to unilaterally impose tariffs on virtually every country in the world - except Russia — hmmm .
And those tariffs, which are sales taxes on the American people, are raising the cost of everything from groceries, to clothing to electronics, for every family in the district.
However, it’s Lawler’s attacks on women’s reproductive rights that hit Davidson in a really personal way. Her Republican House Rep claims on his campaign website that his views on abortion are ‘mainstream’.
The reality is - and he spells it out on the site - that he only supports abortion in cases of rape, incest or a serious health threat to the mother. And he opposes what he describes as ‘ late term’ abortions, which according to many Republicans, is anything after 12 weeks.
LAWLER CLAIMS TO BE ‘MAINSTREAM’ ON ABORTION - THAT’S BS
None of that is ‘mainstream’ and it’s completely unacceptable to Beth, who refuses to accept the Republican vision of women returning to the Dark Ages, when unmarried girls who were ‘in trouble in the family way’ had to leave their homes and give birth secretly, so they wouldn’t ruin their reputations.
Beth’s grandmother, who was an early feminist, told her about those days and went on to become a founding donor to Emily’s List, an organization that was organized to elect ‘pro choice’ women to Congress - like Beth today.
Davidson personally understands how critical it is for women to have access to full reproductive healthcare. She successfully survived two bouts of serious thyroid cancer, which delayed her ability to start a family with her husband Jeff Rothman.
Then she suffered through a diagnosis of infertility ,four years of multiple miscarriages and a failed round of IVF before getting a ‘lucky break’ and finally getting pregnant with her daughter, Josie, who is now a freshman in college.
It’s because of those experiences that Beth knows how difficult and emotionally devastating it can be for some women to start a family.

“Our first round of IVF failed which was heartbreaking and we were out of pocket for $10,000. We found out on the 23rd of December , so right before Christmas and I remember just lying on the couch and crying”.
“Then getting up and making my husband drive me home to my family in Michigan, because I just wanted to be home with my parents.”
“But having said that, I did get pregnant with my daughter, the next month… my doctor said - ‘you know, sometimes you keep trying to catch a butterfly and then it lands in your hand.”
Davidson and her husband got lucky again when she unexpectedly learned three and a half years later hat she was pregnant with her son, Hugo, now a freshman in a local public high school.
As a mother of a daughter, Beth says it’s made her even more fierce about getting elected toCongress and to have a Democratic majority there, in the Senate and hopefully in the presidency in 2029, so that she can help legislate back, national protection for women’s reproductive choices.
“When the political will is there , you can achieve incredible things . And I hope that people come together and do that.”
She knows for a certainty that Mike Lawler will never do that. Before Trump was elected he voted against the Women’s Health Protection Act in Congress, which would have protected a national right to abortion.
As part of his vote for the ‘BB Bill” Lawler also took part in defunding Planned Parenthood , where millions of women have received their essential reproductive health checkups, pap smears and their birth control for decades.
Davidson says that as a young woman, she relied on Planned Parenthood for her healthcare. “ I always believed it would be there,” she says.” I never for a minute thought women would lose access.”
Now as she travels around the 17th Congressional District meeting with the people who she hopes will be her future constituents , she hears from men that they too are “disturbed and disgusted that there is no longer a guaranteed access to reproductive care in this country.”
Listen, it’s not easy running for Congress today with Donald Trump threatening every member of the Democratic party and with having to raise over a million dollars to compete. Beth says that Elon Musk loaded $1.7 million into Lawler’s campaign in 2024.
That’s why I want to talk with as many candidates who put re-establishing women as equals in this country, on their campaign front burner’s.
And that’s why I wanted to introduce you to Beth Davidson.
So if you are freaking out about Trump and the Republicans destroying both our reproductive rights and democracy - interesting how they go hand in hand - then do something constructive.
Donate to a Congressional or Senate candidate of your choice. Post card, phone bank or door knock. Whatever you can do will help.
If Beth isn’t giving up, then we can keep fighting too.
e freaking out about the attacks on our democracy and our reproductive rights , which go hand in hand, you CAN do things.
Pick candidates for Congress or the Senate that share your values and support them - with donations, post carding, phone banking
It’s time for so - called ‘moderate’ Republican Mike Lawler to stop betraying his constituents in New York’s 17th Congressional District. He’s got to go, Beth Davidson tells me.
Davidson is the leading candidate in a crowded field of Dems vying to take on the Republican Lawler who is serving his 2nd term in Congress and backing Donald Trump every step of the way, including voting for his so called ‘Big beautiful Bill.’
He is a ‘wolf in sheep’s clothing’ is the way that his fed -up constituents describe them and hundreds turned up at two early summer Town Halls, where he was repeatedly booed and his security dragged out one senior, a woman who dared to question him about xxx.
Now Davidson doesn’t mince words about the damage Lawler has done to the women in his district, who need basic reproductive healthcare like pap smears, breast checks, STD testing, birth control preceriptions
